Spaces Conduct and Ethics for a more responsible press

By Nathalie Dollé

Although a number of citizens and media owners dream of doing without them, journalists have not yet disappeared. Their number has doubled in 20 years. In this period of weakness professional, they have no choice and are forced to question their role and function within a new type of business, in a society itself in a crisis of representation. Both essential public good life democratic and market commodity subject to market forces, information has an ambivalent status. But beyond the disturbing findings, it is necessary to find ways to rewrite a social contract between a profession and its public. The press will have to quickly make choices and assume a role or not is to honestly inform, to live the debate to help people make choices knowingly. They looked little like a litany she insists its necessary freedom, often forgetting their duties and more responsibilities.

Because a contract is binding nature several stakeholders, we have chosen to concern ourselves with those who could participate in negotiations on the quality of information: the journalists themselves, journalists in their dealings with the public and with newspaper editors.

Two ways are explored in parallel: the redefinition of a profession on the one hand, the renewal of ties with all other partners.

We will deal here only questions relating to ethics, ethics and responsibility, leaving aside questions about the economic links. He became

necessary to return to the fundamentals of art. What is a journalist? What is his work, what is its mission? What is it? What is its exact role in society? What are her rights, duties and responsibilities? Who can or should it be accountable? Which social forces, political or legislative can rely on trust?
